  • Thousands of grant peer reviewers share concerns in global survey “Based on a survey of 4,700 researchers worldwide — also found that recognition is an important incentive for reviewers. More than half said that they are more likely to agree to review grant applications if funders acknowledge their efforts.”
  • ROR is seeking donations. “ROR aims to raise $175,000 in donations over the next two years. As a supporter, you’ll have an opportunity to be part of this exciting community effort from the beginning and to ensure its long-term growth and success. Our first fundraising target is $75,000 by the end of 2019 in order to secure enough funds to hire a technical lead and to organize an in-person ROR Community planning meeting at PIDapalooza in January 2020. “
  • Richard Wynne comments on the Insight Report by Outsell, Inc. published in collaboration with Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) “The Scholarly Communications Ecosystem is Bracing for the Full Impact of the Digital Age”, articulates a growing unease spreading through the scholarly ecosystem. This time the barbarians really do seem to be at the gate. But even more alarming, maybe the barbarians are right!

  • Professor Gary Pisano at Harvard Business School talks about how to construct a strategy, system, and culture of innovation that creates sustained growth and his new book, Creative Construction in this Innovation Leader interview.
  • Ola Henfridsson and Joe Nandhakumar write about a new strategy tool for the digital age:
    “Digital innovation is at the heart of any strategy in the digital age and to be successful doesn’t stop at a one-off cleverly designed resource. Launching the product or service is just the beginning, it then needs to be attractive enough so it is recombined many times by other users, with new updates and value paths constantly being sought.”

The Royal Society of Medicine’s Medical apps: Mainstreaming innovation event is happening on 4 April. The event will examine the growing role that apps play in healthcare delivery. As apps move from concept to practice using cutting-edge technology, demonstrating efficacy becomes increasingly important, resulting in regulatory and legal issues. Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock MP, will talk of the importance of good design in medical apps and how it can improve patient and clinician experience. There will also be a number of presentations from new and established medical start-ups, showcasing the transformative effects these new technologies can have.

(This ranking uses ComScore data which is focused on the U.S. and looks at unique visitors/viewers). Our guess is that a similar chart for academic publishing would show surprisingly little change.

  • Create ‘rebuttal’ unit to counteract fake news, scientists told
    “In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Professor Massey and Professor Iyengar say that, in the US, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine could “form a consortium of professional scientific organisations to fund the creation of a media and internet operation that monitors networks, channels, and web platforms known to spread false and misleading scientific information so as to be able to respond quickly with a countervailing campaign of rebuttal based on accurate information through Facebook, Twitter, and other forms of social media”.”

Publishers’ are increasingly closing down their Chatbots reports Digiday: “The Guardian shut down its chatbot on Facebook’s Messenger earlier this year “in line with our strategy to engage more with readers on our own platforms. We remain committed to experimenting with ways to deliver the best of our journalism according to our readers’ changing habits,” said a spokesperson.”

Google has announced a new markup system that’s going to make content more accessible through voice search. he search giant has been working with schema.org to create a new markup property that allows you to wrap parts of your content in tags that Google can ‘read’ aloud to users for relevant queries, much like an audible version of instant answers.

Digiday report on a new study by Chartbeat which shows that only a third of publishers actually see clear evidence of a traffic increase from Google’s AMP services. The study looked at 159 publishers that adopted AMP in 2017. Most were U.S. publishers and represented a mix of national, local, news and lifestyle.

As the Frankl token sale and the Scienceroot bounty program draw near Ian Mulvany has a thoughtful piece about blockchain technology in STEM. I’ve yet to see a killer application for blockchain, I can see how a blockchain based experimentation platform which uses smart contracts, something like breadboard, could be useful but it’s a fairly niche application. Perhaps The Remarkablz  team  can build a CryptoKitties style trading game where we can trade scientists and do strange breeding experiments to see what happens if you take Mary Anning (English paleontologist) and merge her with Zhang Heng (Chinese inventor and Astronomer)… or perhaps not!
